Gardening

Ahhh ... spring weather!... time to work outdoors! A good friend of mine came and helped me plant my Dahlias yesterday but we ended up digging a new garden beds in front of my walkway. Fortunately, it rained the night before so the ground was not too hard but carrying these stones is enough to give anybody a carpal tunnel syndrome! lol I really prefer a shorter plants to go in here but since I have about 4 buckets of dahlia tubers, we planted some ... I plan to surround it with lower growing annuals like Petunias and Geraniums, can't wait to see how they look like when they're blooming.

After all those digging, hauling and planting, we rewarded ourselves with a well known Filipino dessert called Halo-Halo. It is a mixture of shaved ice, evap milk, coconut sport or young coconut meat, yam, plantain (banana), and beans. This is usually eaten in a tall glass with a leche flan on top and/or rice crispies.

BUT, instead of shaving ice and tall glasses, etc. I did a short cut ... a week before, I made an ice candy halo-halo (pictured above.) I mixed all the ingredients, filled an ice candy bags and put them in the freezer ... less work and no dishes. :)
That was a nice ending to a tiring day!

Hi Nance,
Looks like we were both busy planting this weekend. Your Halo-Halo sounds yummy!

Yes, I will be back to Hornell Ny sometime soon. We still have family there. So when I go, I will let you know and we can meet in Naples. That would be fun!

The new bed along the walkway would look great. It would create a sort of a trim between grass and walkway. You are lucky to have a friend who is helping you dig and plant. It would take me a while to prod myself to do that kind of work by myself. My bones are lazy. LOL

Show us a picture of it, when your dahlias are blooming.

So, you don't have snows anymore...

It's good that you can get back into gardening again...

Your halo-halo must be very yummy. Here in Manila, we're eating halo-halo in Chowking almost everyday. Sobrang init na kasi dito ngayon...

wow, you have a nice and clean garden.
nice too, you have a good friend who helps you.

the reward is the halo-halo.... while looking the pics, i think that is ice candy....

nice idea, i do it, while kim likes very much our halo2x, but my problem is the crushed ice...wala kasi akong maschine for this, nasira nya.......then we used our hands, minsan nasaktan pa ang daliri to crushed it....manually...
pero huwag naman yon Carpal tunnel Syndrome....lol

hello Nance,...kumusta na.
back to blogging naman ako, hope tuloy na ito, kasi minsan i have no time to open my pc if the weather is nice, panay ang pasyal namin ni bernie sa forest namin....lol

or biking around the field near to us.

sigi, bye and regards to all.......

Nance, that was a nice substitute for the regular halo-halo! My husband loves eating halo-halo but I refuse do it because it takes a lot of effort. Thank you for the idea, I really learn a lot from your blog!

nini,
... and it is so easy, just mix a jar of halo halo mix, one can of evap and equal part of water. i like a lot of filling so i normally add about half a jar of macapuno or nata de coco.

let me know if you need ice candy bags... will shoot some your way!

oh i hope so, mari ... i hope the dahlias are not too tall by a walkway.

i will surely post pics when they're in bloom.

i'm pretty sure we're done with snow, dodong. we'll probably still get frost but they should be ok since they are underground. annuals are recommended to be planted after Memorial day (5/26/08)... by then temp will be decent.

vk, nice to see you're back. biking and/or taking walks are nice activities too ... they are healthy.

that's what i use for my halo halo too, the one in a jar. (halo halo mix) don't have time to cook each of the ingredients.

nice to see you back!

paula,
welcome! ice candy halo halo should solve the problem. you don't have to shave ice, although nowadays they sell electric machine that shave real fine ice (not crushed).

thanks for the visit.

what a cool idea with the ice candy, nance! Where did you get the narrow plastic bags? My daughters and I have been looking for those to make ice candy with.
